Science Olympiad

Science + Engineering, With A Scoreboard

Science Olympiad gives EBIA students a chance to take STEM learning into team competition. Events can require scientific knowledge, experimental design, engineering, building, measurement, data analysis, coding, and problem-solving under time constraints.

What Students Do

Science Olympiad is not one single science test. A team divides responsibility across multiple events and areas of expertise. Depending on the year’s official event slate, students may prepare for life science, earth science, physics, chemistry, engineering, inquiry, technology, and build events.

Examples from the 2027 Division B slate include Boomilever, Scrambler, Experimental Design, Crime Busters, Anatomy & Physiology, Dynamic Planet, Solar System, Codebusters, and Write It Do It.

Build Events

Students may design, construct, test, measure, troubleshoot, and improve a device over multiple iterations.

In build events such as Boomilever or Scrambler, students engineer devices within detailed constraints, test repeatedly, record results, and revise for better performance.

Lab + Inquiry Events

Students may analyze evidence, conduct an experiment, interpret results, or work through a scientific problem with a partner.

In events such as Experimental Design or Crime Busters, students must organize evidence quickly, conduct or interpret investigations, and communicate a defensible conclusion under time pressure.

Knowledge Events

Students develop deep expertise in a scientific area and learn to apply that knowledge quickly and accurately under competition conditions.

Knowledge events such as Anatomy & Physiology, Dynamic Planet, Solar System, or Water Quality ask students to develop deep content expertise and apply it accurately in competition.

How The Team Works

Students prepare in pairs and small groups while contributing to the larger team. They learn to divide work and practice deliberately. They also keep records, improve designs, and perform under time constraints.

Team members meet after school on a regular weekly schedule and add focused build, test, or study sessions as competitions approach.

A faculty advisor coordinates the team, with coaches, staff, family volunteers, or subject-area mentors supporting individual events as available.

Interested students sign up at the start of the season and explore event options. Students are matched to events based on interests, strengths, and team needs. Regular attendance, preparation, and follow-through are expected.

Competition

EBIA has a history of participating in regional Science Olympiad competition. The team prepares for Bay Area invitational opportunities and the regional Science Olympiad competition, with the exact tournament calendar shared once registrations are confirmed.

The team celebrates medals and placements. Success is also measured through stronger builds, deeper event expertise, better collaboration, and improved performance from one tournament to the next.

Regional Results

EBIA’s middle-school Science Olympiad teams have produced strong event finishes over multiple seasons. At the 2022 Bay Area Regional Tournament, EBIA Blue finished 13th overall. The team placed 3rd in Dynamic Planet and 4th in Meteorology. EBIA Green added top-10 finishes in Ornithology, Food Science, and Bridges. At the 2026 Alameda County Regional Tournament, EBIA Team 1 finished 17th overall. The team placed 5th in Scrambler and 6th in both Dynamic Planet and Entomology.

Those results are one reason Oakland Enrolls has described EBIA’s middle-school Science Olympiad program as award-winning.

Why It Fits EBIA

Science Olympiad brings together the same habits students practice in project-based learning. Students develop curiosity, precision, iteration, collaboration, persistence, and the ability to explain why something works.

For students who want to go deeper in science and engineering, this is one of EBIA’s signature opportunities.
