Afterschool For Middle Schoolers Who Still Want To Move, Make, Explore, And Connect
EBIA partners with The Core Group to provide afterschool programming designed specifically around the energy and independence of middle school students.
The Core Group describes its vision around joyful, immersive education. The program emphasizes movement, making, outdoor experiences, exploration, and real participation. Its founder has also highlighted the value of adults who bring distinctive skills and genuine enthusiasm to their work with students.
That spirit fits naturally with EBIA’s Learning by Doing approach.
What Afterschool Can Look Like
The Core Group gives students a structured place to transition out of the academic day while continuing to learn, create, and connect. Programming can include a mix of:
- Homework, organization, and academic support
- Maker and build challenges
- Art and creative projects
- Sports, games, and movement
- Cooking and practical-life activities
- Outdoor exploration
- Team challenges and community activities
- Special projects, visiting instructors, and field experiences
- Student-choice activities based on interests
The exact rotations change because the program is designed to respond to the students in front of us.
Structure + Choice
Middle school students need both structure and choice. They have clear expectations, routines, supervision, and time to complete responsibilities. They also have opportunities to make choices, explore interests, spend time with peers, and participate in activities that feel different from their academic classes.
That balance gives students age-appropriate independence without asking families to choose between meaningful programming and reliable extended-day care.
Academic Support
Students have access to time for homework, organization, reading, Google Classroom, and incomplete assignments. Afterschool staff can help students prioritize responsibilities and make a plan before moving into enrichment and recreation.
A Continuation Of Belonging By Design
The adults students see after school are part of their school experience too. Positive relationships, active participation, teamwork, and a sense of community remain central after the final bell.
For some students, afterschool is where they discover a new interest or develop a skill. It may also be where they find a close friend or become known for something they do especially well. It is another place to grow as an innovator.
